Pathways to Work - Essential Skills for the Supply Chain

The Goal:

The goal of the program is for students to build their Essential Skills and NOC-specific skills simultaneously. For example, students with retail as their targeted goal may read articles about the future of retail, write emails and memos pertaining to authentic retail matters, review retail credit applications or sales spreadsheets, solve numeracy problems specific to retail occupations, and discuss working with others within the context of a typical retail hierarchy.

NOC-specific Essential Skills training puts students on a fast track to learning job skills. It targets the development of a defined skill set. Students only learn the skills they need to perform specific job tasks.



To earn a secondary school diploma, a student needs to successfully complete a minimum of 11 grade levels of math. Each math course builds upon the other, preparing the student for further training in mathematics. While the successful culmination of up to 12 years of math study along with the additional courses required to earn a diploma are certain to lead to numerous academic and/or career opportunities for the student, the math courses do not stand alone to teach specific job skills. In contrast, a student who develops NOC-specific Essential Skills with retail as their targeted goal will only learn the numeracy skills required to meet the expectations of that occupation. NOC specific Essential Skills training is a faster and more innovative pathway to employment.
