What are Essential Skills?

Essential Skills:

  • are the fundamental skills needed for work, learning, and life
  • provide the foundation for learning all other skills
  • enhance people’s ability to adapt to workplace change
  • enable people to evolve with their jobs and succeed in the labour market

The Government of Canada and other national and international agencies have identified and validated nine Essential Skills:

9 Eseential Skills

Upon completion of their program, clients will be prepared for: •entry level or on-the-job training opportunities

  • formal vocational training programs
  • formal post-secondary programs


12-WEEK ESSENTIAL SKILLS PROGRAMS
 

General Office
Prerequisite: Grade 8-10 Reading Level  |   Complexity Levels: 1-4

This program helps adult learners to develop the fundamental skills needed to succeed in an office environment. Skill areas include:reading, writing, document use, numeracy, oral communication, thinking skills, working with others, and computer use.

 

Entry and Higher Level Jobs
NOC Specific
Prerequisite: Grade 6-10 Reading Level  |  Complexity Levels: 1-5

This program helps adult learners to develop the fundamental skills needed for work, learning, and life. This NOC-specific Essential Skills program is designed to enhance the learner’s ability to succeed and adapt in the workplace. Skill areas include: reading, writing, document use, numeracy, oral communication, thinking skills, working with others, and computer use.
 

Literacy and ESL
NOC Specific
Prerequisite: Native Speaker or CLB Speaking/Listening Level 4  |  Complexity Levels: 1-2

This program helps low literacy and ESL learners to develop the fundamental skills needed for entry-level work, learning, and life. This NOC-specific program is designed to enhance the ability of low literacy and ESL learners to succeed and adapt in the workplace. Skill areas include: reading, writing, document use, numeracy, oral communication, thinking skills, working with others, and computer use.


Customer Service
Prerequisite: Grade 6-10 Reading Level  |  Complexity Levels: 1-4

This program helps adult learners to develop the fundamental skills needed to succeed in a service-based work environment. Skill areas include: reading, writing, document use, numeracy, oral communication, thinking skills, working with others, and computer use.

 

Please Note: The recommended hours of instruction can be time-lined at the discretion of the funding agency; options include 15, 20, or 30 hours per week. Clients benefit from the tailored programs and low student-teacher ratio that Pathways offers. Our standard student-teacher ratio is 3:1.
